How I Came to Write A Novel About George Eliot
Title
How I Came to Write A Novel About George Eliot
Description
Reading biographies of George Eliot, I was always bothered by the ending. The
Johnny Cross episode jarred each time. I couldn’t make sense of it; it didn’t seem to
fit with what had gone before. My usual reaction, in fact, was to dispense with it, by
viewing it as an irrelevant coda to the novelist’s story.
But an aspect of it amused me, and finally got my attention – and that was
Eliot’s relationship with the public.
