George Eliot According to Women Then and Now: A Comparison of Observations by Her Contemporaries and Women Today

Title

George Eliot According to Women Then and Now: A Comparison of Observations by Her Contemporaries and Women Today

Description

During this bi-centenary year, it seems appropriate to recall some of the comments which were published about George Eliot by the women who were actually acquainted with her during her lifetime. Women have always been fascinated with her and her novels and poems; for example, both Geraldine Jewsbury and Anne Mozley published reviews of Adam Bede in 1859, and as George Eliot’s writings appeared, the volumes were regularly reviewed by women readers.
